St Andrew's Cathedral Choir Farewell Concert
St Andrew’s Cathedral Choir is officially 140 years old this year, dating back to the Cathedral’s consecration in 1868, although the Choir’s origins date from at least 1836. Therefore the Cathedral Choir is one of the oldest continuously active choirs in Australia. Over the past few years, the Choir has fought off controversy over its future and is now flourishing and in good voice. To celebrate these aspects of their history, the Choir is going on a tour to England and Italy in July this year.
The first tour under the direction of Ross Cobb, the 11th Organist and Choirmaster of St Andrew’s, the Choir has been accepted to sing at services and concerts in some of Europe’s most historic and significant buildings; Wells Cathedral, Dedham and Harwich Parish Churches, Bath Abbey, Bristol Cathedral, All Soul’s Langham Place, Christ Church Clifton, the Anglican churches of Venice and Florence, St Paul’s Cathedral London and, for the first time, the Basilica of San Marco in Venice.
St Andrew’s Cathedral Choir is therefore inviting as many of our friends and members of the Sydney community as possible to attend our Farewell Concert to enjoy wonderful music and help to celebrate and support our ministry. It will be held on Saturday 28 June 2008 from 4.30pm in St Andrew’s Cathedral (George Street) – free parking available in St Andrew’s House Carpark.
